In the eleven chapters that make up this book, Emil Cioran brings together his own sharp observations on the tendency to exist without denying the reality of death, the West as a "breathless civilization", exile, destiny, novels and other subjects, in his usual surprising style.

There is knowledge that is lethal to life and inherently destructive. The texts in this book start from this knowledge, but at the same time they break away from it; They present themselves as a series of expressions of astonishment, the expression of a contraction.
