New Art History
One of the fields that has undergone intense transformation since the 1960s is art history. Art history, which gradually moved away from form and style-based approaches as it started to draw more from different fields such as sociology, psychology and philosophy, was renewed by gaining an interdisciplinary quality and enriched with new critical tools and approaches that can interpret the art of the recent period.
Prepared by Jonathan Harris as a critical introduction to the field, New Art History opens a theoretical door to the fundamental changes in art history and practices from the 1960s to the present. Questioning the established values and traditional approaches in the field of art history and examining the connection of this field with social transformations from the 1960s to the present, Harris sets out from the basic texts of critics who have not excluded the 'social' in their readings of art, from TJ Clark to Griselda Pollock. In this context, New Art History approaches art practice and history from different perspectives, such as the effects of capitalist modernity, forms of visual representation in the context of the nation-state, subjects, identities and reflections of visual ideologies within the framework of feminism, sexuality and body politics.
