History of Russia Since 1800 Book Description The authors thought of writing this book right after the collapse of the Soviet Union. When they finished, the book became the first synthetic history work to propose a new view of Russian history that did not end with the establishment of the Soviet world. This book is one of the two most used textbooks on Russian history in US and European universities today. The authors of the book wanted to tell a history of Russia in such a way that, on the one hand, it would contain a clear and balanced chronology of the main events, and on the other hand, it would include the most remarkable aspects of history today. Therefore, the book focuses on daily life, social roles and identities, cultural dynamics and gender issues. Religious experiences, which have played a vital role throughout the history of modern Russia, receive the attention they deserve in this book. The authors also devote considerable space to the often neglected non-Russian and non-Slavic national communities and their share in Russian history. One of the book's greatest achievements is to treat issues of culture—literature, art, music—as fundamental building blocks of the historical narrative, rather than treating them as embellishments of "real" history. This book is also the first Russian history book to include a separate section on migration and diaspora that emerged in the 19th and especially the 20th centuries. In short, History of Russia reflects historians' approaches to the history of Russia as it took shape in the 1990s and 2000s. Richard Stites (1931-2010) was a leading figure in the historiography of the Soviet Union and Russia, and he wrote RevolutionaryDreams: UtopianVisionandExperimental Life in the Russian Revolution (Oxford UP, 1989);Serfdom, Society, andtheArts in ImperialRussia: ThePleasureandthePower (Yale UP, 2005);andTheFourHorsemen: RidingtoLiberty in Post-Napoleonic Europe (Oxford UP, 2014) is one of his best-known works. CatherineEvtuhov (1960- ) is a professor of history at Columbia University and the author of Portrait of a Russian Province: Economy, Society, andCivilization in Nineteenth-Century NizhniiNovgorod (University of Pittsburgh Press, 2011) and The Cross & theSickle: SergeiBulgakovandtheFate of Russian ReligiousPhilosophy (Cornell UP, 1997). He is the author of the books named. Stites and Evtuhov were colleagues at Georgetown University from 1992 to 2010. (From the Promotional Bulletin)
