The first half of the 1950s was not only a period of philosophical study for Foucault, but also a period in which he had the opportunity to closely examine literature, psychology and psychiatry. As a matter of fact, in 1952 and 1953, he studied and received a diploma in the fields of psychopathology and experimental psychology, respectively, and then he studied at Sainte-Marie. Michel Foucault, who attended Lacan's seminars at the Mother Hospital, argues in his first book, Mental Illness and Psychology, which was first published in 1954 and had its second revised edition in 1962, and that psychology is only possible by taking madness under control. While the Middle Ages and the Renaissance glorified madness as the expression of a divine power and a higher level of reason (Erasmus, In Praise of Madness), in the Classical Age, the insane began to be considered the same as other criminals and confined to mental hospitals. Thus, the effort to understand madness would be replaced by the effort to contain it. While the first part of the book reflects Foucault's initial interest in Freud and the psychoanalytic tradition, the second part, which was expanded and rewritten in 1962, reveals a dramatic change in Foucault's thought, examining the history of madness within a social and cultural framework. This work, which was prepared for the student audience at the request of Althusser, positions him outside the tradition and turns towards the criticism of Freud that dominated his later works. Perhaps it can be read as the best starting text for those who want to understand the intellectual adventure of Michel Foucault.
