Alkibiades 1-2

Plato is undoubtedly one of the most important and influential philosophers in the history of thought. He contributed to the institutionalization of philosophy and the formation of the written tradition in philosophy, and was the initiator of the idealist philosophy tradition that would determine the entire medieval thought with its two-world metaphysics. Plato, who is also important in terms of his influence on Christian Medieval philosophy and Islamic thought, addressed all the problems discussed throughout the history of thought hundreds of years ago and built the first major philosophical system.

Alcibiades I and Alcibiades II are among the youth dialogues or Socratic dialogues in which Plato conveys the life and views of his teacher rather than his own philosophical views.

As in most of Plato's Socratic dialogues, the main characters in Alcibiades I and Alcibiades II are Socrates and an interlocutor. Socrates' interlocutor is Alcibiades, who is a bright young man in many aspects and who will play very important roles in Athenian politics as a famous politician, orator and commander in the coming years. Both dialogues, like all Socratic dialogues, deal with moral issues and moral virtues. In the first one, the emphasis is on the wisdom related to knowing oneself and prudence and moderation in connection with this wisdom. On the other hand, in the second one, the importance of knowing what is morally good is emphasized and it is revealed that correct behavior, true goodness and true happiness cannot be achieved if moral knowledge is lacking.
