Anne Louise Germaine Staël-Holstein (1766-1817): Swiss writer known as Madame de Staël.

XVI. She is the daughter of Louis XIV's Genevan Finance Minister, Jacques Necker. He was interested in literature from an early age, writing his first work, Eloges, at the age of eleven, and interpreting Montesquieu's On the Spirit of the Laws at the age of fifteen. In 1786, she married Staël-Holstein, the Swedish ambassador to Paris, and became a baroness. His novels were bestsellers before the French Revolution, and he was an inspiring name in the field of literary criticism. He was carried away by political enthusiasm just before the revolution, and for this reason he was exiled several times and some of his books were censored. He traveled during his periods of exile, and among the countries he visited, he showed special interest in Germany and Austria. His impressions from these travels and his thoughts on German culture.

He collected his views in the book On Germany. In On Germany, he discusses topics such as the character of the German race, cities, daily life, language, literature and philosophy with almost encyclopedic meticulousness and in an extremely fluent language.

Madame de Staël's comments and explanations gave the work an anthropological, ethnographic and literary analysis. This magnificent work of German culture is in Turkish for the first time in the Hasan Âli Yücel Classics Series.
