  • At the end of the 19th century and at the beginning of this century, Islamic scholars and intellectuals put forward different views to help the Islamic world get out of the impasse it was in. The basis and reference of almost all of them was the Quran and the Sunnah. The point where they differed was the difference in understanding and interpretation regarding understanding the Quran and the Sunnah. No one objected that we could only be saved by returning to Islam. The real reason for our backwardness was that we stayed away from Islam and Sharia or could not implement Islam and Sharia properly. The important thing was how we would implement Islam in this new era and this new world. How will Islamic thought be brought to life again? What kind of attitude and attitude will be taken towards the new technology produced by the Western renaissance? Ottoman scholars and intellectuals during the Constitutional Monarchy period sought answers to these and similar questions. While some of the ulama and intellectuals of this period defended a traditionalist Islam, the other part were innovators who put forward the reinterpretation of Islam according to the requirements and conditions of the age.
