Tree of Knowledge - Biological Foundations of Human Understanding
The Tree of Knowledge, written by two Chilean scientists, Humberto R. Maturana and Francisco J. Varela in 1984, was one of the truly groundbreaking and pioneering books. Today, many theses developed in the fields of neuroscience, evolutionary psychology, complexity studies and consciousness studies, which have left their mark on the last ten to fifteen years in the field of science, were preceded by the theory of "cognitive constructivism", which is explained in a very simple language and with plenty of pictures in this book. The seemingly simple basic thesis of this book, which is included in the curriculum of many universities in America and even started to be taught in high schools in Chile, is this: "Doing is knowing, knowing is doing."
HUMBERTO R. MATURANA: Silean biologist and thinker. He was born in Santiago in 1928. He first studied medicine and then biology at the University of Chile; He received his doctorate in biology from Harvard University. Maturana, who has authored numerous scientific articles and many books so far, currently serves as a faculty member at the University of Chile.
< FRANCISCO G. VARELA: Silean biologist, thinker, neuroscientist. He was born in Santiago in 1946. Varela, who wrote numerous studies in the fields of mathematics and philosophy as well as biology, neurology and cognitive sciences, and inspired many thinkers and neuroscientists with his works, died in Paris in 2001.
