You Don't Know What Love Is
Raymond Carver, who reached a wide readership in America in the mid-1970s with his stories titled Will You Please Be Quiet, Please , was later criticized by critics with his story books such as What We Talk about When We Talk about Love, Elephant and Cathedral. He has been described as "America's Chekhov". The movie Human Views from High Society, which master director Robert Altman adapted from these stories and shot in 1993, further spread Carver's fame.
The child of a working-class family, Carver married at a very young age, had two children, and had to work in low-wage jobs while completing her education. The author, who was addicted to alcohol at a young age, could not prevent the end of his marriage due to the problems he experienced. Carver, who quit drinking in 1976, met Tess Gallagher the following year and spent the rest of his life with her. This period is known as Carver's "second spring", when he devoted himself intensely to poetry. The poems we have collected under the title You Don't Know What Love is, are a selection from his books published in this period.
