The news was learned on February 28, 1955: Eight members of the crew of a destroyer called "Caldas" of the Colombian Navy fell into the sea and disappeared from this destroyer, which was caught in a storm in the Antilles Sea. The destroyer, which was leaving Alabama and going to "Cartagena" after being repaired in the "Mobile" city shipyards, reached this port one hundred and twenty minutes after the disaster. The search for the survivors began immediately, with the participation of the United States military units responsible for the control of the Panama Canal and other aid organizations in the Southern Caribbean region. Four days later, the search was stopped and these missing sailors were officially considered dead. But one of these missing sailors was found dying on a deserted beach in Northern Colombia a week later. This sailor named "Luis Alejandro Velasco" was left on an abandoned raft for ten days without eating or drinking. This book is the story of what he went through.
-Gabriel Garcia Marquez-
