When Our Village was published in 1950, it literally caused an earthquake in large sections of society. When the author's "village notes", which he started writing when he was a young teacher at the age of 17, were turned into a book and published, they first attracted the anger of the government. Because the cry of poverty rising from the village was a slap in the face to those who wanted to close their ears and eyes to all kinds of negativity, and to those who tried to portray the villages as green, fertile, places where beautiful village girls carry water from clear springs. Of course, there would be a punishment for expressing the fact that the stone age was still alive in the villages. While everywhere was under snow and there was no transportation to the villages, the young teacher who was trying to "prepare his students for life" in his village was unaware of the noise his book was making. When the snow started to melt and the roads opened, the first visitors to Makal were the gendarmes. He was arrested. On the contrary, Bizim Köyü was translated into various languages and began to spread beyond the borders of the country.

When the president of the period invited the writer to Çankaya Mansion, this attitude was perceived as the Democratic Party's importance to the village and the villagers' problems. But that didn't last long either. First, the Village Institutes, which became the target of various slanders, were closed, and then the pressures began on the teachers of the Institute. A systematic lynching campaign was launched against writers and intellectuals who spoke about the village and the anachronistic conditions of the villagers.

Tahsin Yücel's “Our Village was a masterpiece in 1950. The determination of "a masterpiece" in 1995 shows that, despite the half-century period that has passed, the author and his work are still up to date.

It is a very accurate assessment in terms of showing

Our Village is considered the first book based on village reality in Turkish literature and the pioneer of social realism.
