Painted Veil
Set in London and Hong Kong in the 1920s, The Painted Veil is the story of a woman's spiritual awakening. Kitty has been raised by her mother to make a marriage that will allow her to climb the social ladder. However, as she grows older and no such marriage appears on the horizon, she panics and marries a man she does not love; Walter, a bacteriologist working in Hong Kong. In the process that begins with Walter learning about Kitty's betrayal, the young woman will realize her own shallowness and human weaknesses, and will begin to search for meaning in her life for the first time. When The Painted Veil was first published as a serial in Cosmopolitan magazine in 1924, some people who drew parallels between the characters and events in the novel and their own lives filed a lawsuit against the magazine.
