The real enemy of the poor is writing! I used you to darken the enigma of our shabby lives.
Ice Swords tells the story of three brothers; Hazmi, Mesut and Halilhan and his best friend Gogi. These “shabby men” of the slums strive to revive their bankrupt company. However, Halilhan’s Volvo, which has become both his confidant and his beloved, always causes problems between the brothers. Living in a shantytown on the edge of the world of the rich, these characters try to resist the difficulties, disappointments, exclusions and belittlements that life throws at them with ice swords. However, for Halilhan, who can even endure the blows his Volvo takes, coming to terms with the fact that his best friend Gogi has turned his back on him will not be easy at all.
“I wrote Ice Swords with the idea that the poor, with an undiscovered consciousness, are faking it to people who look at them with disdain,” says Latife Tekin about Ice Swords, which was first published in 1989. And she adds: “For some reason, it does not occur to those who complain about the poor that people living in poverty might have an idea.” Ice Swords addresses the world of the ignored with a deep sensitivity.
