Diplomat İnönü Lausanne 1922-1923
The program for the opening ceremony of the Lausanne Peace Conference has been announced. Host Swiss President Haab will make a "Welcome" speech; British Foreign Secretary Lord Curzon would thank him on behalf of all delegates attending the conference. İsmet İnönü said, “I will talk too.” They said to İnönü, "There is no such tradition." İnönü insisted, “I will also thank you diplomatically.” French Prime Minister Poincare tried to convince İnönü.
On the day the ceremony started, Swiss President Haab spoke first, followed by Lord Curzon. While everyone thought that the ceremony would end, İnönü stood up and walked to the podium. He took his notes out of his pocket and started reading his speech. He clearly stated that he came to Lausanne with the desire for peace and that the Turks were treated very unfairly and were invaded. He finished his speech with the wish that the idea of peace would dominate the entire conference and a just peace would be made, took his seat and sat down.
İnönü, whom they called an “amateur diplomat”, showed that Turkey was equal to all the states participating in the conference with this patriotic and masterful attitude. The success of Lausanne came after the 8-month "war of diplomacy" that started with this movement.
