Stefan Trzyniecki, a young doctor during the Nazi occupation of Poland, starts working at a mental hospital in a nearby area after attending a funeral. At first, the hospital is a very safe shelter for Stefan, who wants to escape from the brutality and inhumane crimes happening outside. But it won't take long for him to learn that the madness going on inside is no different from the war going on right next to him.
Transformation Hospital, one of the first novels of Lem, who also received medical education, is considered the most autobiographical novel that reveals the author's identity, although it does not contain any science fiction elements.
