We can summarize the basic thesis of this book, which brings together gender analysis, psychoanalysis and anthropology and develops a highly original theory about how we look at both society and ourselves, as follows: "The power of emotions", that is, individual subjective meanings, are at least as important as universal, cultural meanings. Chodorow, who studied psychoanalysis after her doctorate in sociology, is one of the most important feminist psychoanalysis theorists. By particularly emphasizing the difference between psychoanalysis as a universalizing theory and psychoanalysis as a therapeutic practice, Nancy Chodorow opposes some postmodernist tendencies that see the person as a simple carrier of social meanings and practices, and, to put it philosophically, she tries to "give the particular its due."
