Remembering with Movies
If political oppression and violence have become widespread in a society, if fear and marginalization are clearly at the forefront in society, if the majority has normalized it and the government has legitimized it, the source of this is almost always a dirty past in which serious traumas have been experienced. These ghosts of the past wander everywhere at all times: in crowded squares, on holidays, in large gatherings or in ordinary daily encounters...
Is it possible to remember, confront, explain, mourn, and heal through movies? Is it enough to consider social traumas as a subject in cinema? What should we do as a society, keeping in mind that such traumas are never individual? Do movies offer an opportunity to get rid of the straitjacket and established beliefs and ideologies that we have been put on as a society?
In this review, Sevcan Sönmez, making use of the theoretical literature on trauma representation, examines the recent efforts in this direction in Turkish cinema through individual films, and investigates what we can expect from cinema in order to confront traumas socially.
