My Life is the Story of a Countryman
In My Life, Chekhov tells the story of a young man who, fed up with the noble class he belongs to and his usual pursuits, chooses to mix with the working class. Misail Poloznev, who rejects the "privileges provided by capital and education", decides to earn his living by performing physical labor. This "revolutionary" move of his is met with reaction from all segments of society. Even the lowest-ranking worker feels threatened by this daring step that shakes the established order. Masha, who comes from the upper class and whom Misail married and settled in a village with, is attached to ideas and fashionable thought movements to spice up her life for short periods of time, with an attitude far from social responsibility and altruism. The author intertwines the conflict in his main character's marriage with social tensions. In this work, which bears traces of his own life and his childhood in Taganrog, Chekhov directed perhaps his harshest criticism towards the corruption and hypocrisy of all classes of Russian society.
