The Novel of the Iliad Epic, the Source of Western Culture. The long-haired Achaeans put on their armor after hurriedly eating a few bites in their huts. The Trojans were also busy putting on their armor in the city. They were fewer in number than the Achaeans, but their hearts burned with the fire of war. They were aware that they were engaged in a life-and-death war. When the preparations were completed, all the gates of the city were opened and the Trojan army poured out as if they had been released from their chains. Soldiers of the two armies met on the battlefield and a terrible massacre began. Spears and swords were clashing fiercely, and pot-bellied shields were beating each other. There was a terrible hum in the huge area; moans and screams rose to the skies. The land was a river of blood.
