SyongMyong, the king of Paekche, a small country on the Korean Peninsula, sent two letters to Emperor Kimmei of the Japanese Yamato dynasty, the first in 545 and the second in 551. In the letters, he asked for support from the Japanese Emperor against his enemies and said the following sentences recommending Buddhism: "Of all known religions, this seems to be the most superior, but it is difficult to describe and difficult to understand." Thus began the adventure of Buddhism in Japan.
