The Class Character of Work in Capitalism and Socialism

In capitalism, the conclusion of an employment contract is viewed in economic terms as a transaction, because labor power is sold as a commodity. In socialism, labor force is no longer a commodity and thus the employment contract, also called 'labor rent', has a completely different economic content. Here, the employment contract is concluded by virtue of the right to work on a voluntary basis with individual state enterprises acting according to the principle of economic accounting, as representatives of the production interests of the entire workers' and peasants' state, and according to their abilities, inclinations, resourcefulness, knowledge, health status, etc. It is the legal expression of the economic relations between workers and paid employees who choose their workplace.
