Wives' Ward
In his novel Karılar Koğuşu, published after his death, Kemal Tahir uses his Malatya Prison experiences to describe Turkey during the Second World War. Will Turkey join the Second World War? If so, will it side with the Germans or the Allies? While the uncertainty of the war drags people into greater misery, Murat, as the prisoners call him, witnesses the lives of people from Istanbul, who are becoming increasingly vulgar and capable of anything as they become vulgar, within the difficulties of prison life. This witnessing takes on a new form when women who have fallen into "bad ways" come to prison. "What is the difference between being a prisoner and being free when the concepts of morality and honor are passed from hand to hand in the face of money and power?" Murat asks himself. Hanım who was sentenced to death, Tözey from the Malatya Brothel, Guard Şefika and little prisoner Aduş... Each of their different stories, along with Murat's interrogations, tell the reader about the never-ending suffering of Anatolian women in prison.
