Mendel is more of an antique dealer than a second-hand bookseller, keeping an inventory of all the books he knows with his incredible memory and living alone in the world he built from books. While he was living a life that was too introverted to even realize that the First World War had begun, he was arrested as he was mistaken for an agent when he started sending letters to other countries because his subscriptions were disrupted. After two years in the concentration camp, nothing will ever be the same again.

Another story, Kızıl, is the story of a young man who falls into a deep depression with the loneliness of being away from his family's protection, while the demands of the big city cause deep wounds in his soul. While he neglects his education, the hands of a little girl suffering from scarlet fever, asking for help, become a ray of hope that will take her out of the well she fell into.
