Maxim Gorky, who inherited the 19th century classical Russian literature tradition from his predecessors, opened new horizons in Soviet literature as the pioneer of the socialist realist approach. At the beginning of the 20th century, he came under the influence of Anton Chekhov; thanks to him, he met Konstantin Stanislavski and Vladimir Nemirovich-Danchenko, two important figures of the Moscow Art Theatre. Gorky's first step into the field of theater was with the Petty Bourgeois he wrote for the Moscow Art Theatre. In the background of the play, the footsteps of the conscious working class and the approaching revolution of 1905 can be heard. Gorky joined Russian theater, which had a very strong classical tradition until that day, with a sociopolitical role, as Chekhov put it. It presents a new horizon and introduces us to the character of Nil, an intellectually self-educated worker who stood out as a brand new person at that time.
