Although ethnic organization activities in Turkey gained momentum in the 60s, the first movements began immediately after the transition to multi-party life, and after 1954, many organizations, mostly Kurdish, were established in the Eastern regions.
Some groups with Marxist-Leninist ideology founded the Kurdish Independence Party in 1958, but were arrested in 1959 on allegations of separatism. They were sent to prisons.
The Democratic Patriotic Higher Education Union, which was founded in Ankara in 1974 under the chairmanship of Abdullah Öcalan, started small-scale armed actions under the name Apocular after a while. The organization later took the name Kurdistan Workers' Party (Partiye Karkeren Kurdistan).
