Modern Prens
In The Modern Prince, which constitutes a section of the Prison Notebooks with a certain internal consistency and integrity, Gramsci approaches the problem of political parties within the scope of the importance he attaches to political organization in terms of developing Marxism as a philosophy of praxis. Inspired by Machiavelli's The Prince, which he finds very valuable, he focuses on what kind of political leadership, strategy and tactics the revolutionary party should develop on its way to power. Just as Machiavelli describes what characteristics a successful prince should have, Gramsci discusses the characteristics that a revolutionary party should possess; It makes analyzes that are still valid today regarding the structure and functioning of the state in the example of Europe and especially Italy, and creates a conceptual mechanism with high explanatory power.
However, Modern Prince is not just a term used by Gramsci for political parties in the modern period, it is also a concrete proposal for the kind of political organization needed to continue the movement that can be called the Leninist breakthrough within the Marxist tradition. For this reason, it would be wrong to confine Gramsci to a vague field of cultural criticism rather than being a thinker who ponders the forms of organization with the perspective of political power.
Modern Prince is a book that deserves to be read and discussed with these aspects...
