Nikolay Vasilyevich Gogol (1809-1852): He was born in Ukraine, into a middle-class landowning family. The village life and Kazakh traditions that influenced his childhood were reflected in his works, and he wrote stories embroidered with elements of Ukrainian folk culture. He became a pioneer of an important innovation in Russian literature with his sense of humor, realistic attitude and lively narration. In Evening Meetings on a Farm Near Dikanka, Arabesques and Mirgorod Stories, he expressed his thoughts on pessimism in the face of life and the evil of the world, as well as humor. His novel Dead Souls is a masterpiece that deals with feudal land ownership and serfdom. Gogol mercilessly ridiculed corrupt bureaucrats in his play The Inspector, a great comedy.
