Nişantaşı Teneke District
In other words, just as the mansions and apartment buildings of Nisantasi, rising at the top, reflected a magnificent wealth, the huts of Teneke District hosted an equally magnificent poverty. This neighborhood, which was founded at the end of the 19th century and disappeared as a result of the great transformation in the mid-1980s, became the living space of poor households who could barely meet even their most basic needs.
Based on his interviews with the residents of the neighborhood, which preserved its ethnic and social structure until the 1950s, Egemen Yilgür presents a striking picture of the prejudices against different ethnic groups of the neighborhood, the population structure complicated by immigration after 1950, and the unifying effect of poverty that eliminated ethnic distinctions. Yilgür's research includes dairy farming, orchard farming, car farming, scrap farming, roasted chickpea farming, wedding musicianship, basket making, tin making, toothpick making, dead washing, freelancing, black market ticket sales, burnt coal collecting, yoghurt making, thread pulling, mobile barbering, lead making, folk medicine. It deals with different aspects of the unique poverty of the neighborhood residents who work in the informal sector or factory workers, that is, "tin neighborhood poverty".
This study, which also examines the disintegration and alienation that occurs when residents of the neighborhood in the lowest income group are forced to leave the neighborhood during the "Nisanta zoning" process, shows how "destructive" even an urban transformation process in which administrative mechanisms do not come into play can be.
