Niteliksiz Adam 1
Austrian writer Robert Musil's (1880 - 1942) giant novel titled The Man Without Qualities is today considered one of the few masterpieces of modernism in the field of fiction.
Musil, who is among the founders of the twentieth century novel along with Kafka, Joyce and Harmann Broch, worked on The Man Without Qualities starting from 1921 until his death. The first two books of the novel were published in 1930, and the third in 1933. The fourth and last unfinished part was published only after almost twenty years.
The Man Without Qualities is truly a novel of age and transition period. In a country called "Imperial Kingdom" by the author, which actually symbolizes the Austro-Hungarian Empire, which was in a state of collapse at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, Musil aims to display all the turmoil of a society and an individual in the process of modernism.
These turmoils are exhibited through the identity of Ulrich, the main character of the novel, that is, the "man without qualifications". Ulrich stands with one foot in the old and the other in the new. The whole problem centers on whether he can overcome the contradictions that are the natural result of this transitional position.
According to Virgil Newmoianu, who wrote a very important review on this novel, The Man Without Qualities is one of the masterpieces that strikingly reveals not only a transition period but also the near future to a careful reader.
