Beyond Nostalgia, Lost Homelands Book Description The phrase "lost homelands" is used very often in Greece. This phrase refers to the unique origins of Ottoman Christian immigrants who were forced to leave their homeland as a result of the Greco-Turkish war of 1919-22 and the Treaty of Lausanne. At first glance, the meaning of this phrase seems quite clear, but at the same time it is full of ambiguities, because the memory of these homelands full of traumas and various difficulties is evidence of a delicate situation directly related to the identity of immigrants and their desire to be an equal part of Greek society. (...) However, the purpose of this book is not to investigate the memory culture of Asia Minor. Rather, it can be said that it is a call to those interested in the Greek Ottomans and the Romioi, including the general public, to undertake a more in-depth excavation research on the cultural and social history of these self-sufficient groups that were within the structure of Ottoman society, not subject to exclusion. Charity and Poverty, consumption and gender relations are the areas that hold this book together as a complete work. I hope the book will be useful for Turkish readers. -H.
