While the Ottoman Empire withdrew after the Balkan War, losing almost all of its territory in Europe, it had to leave behind a mass of people numbering in the hundreds of thousands. The hundreds of thousands in question were Muslims who had suddenly become citizens of a completely different state, even in minority status, while they were Ottoman subjects. This problematic situation, which lasted for about ten years, was resolved due to both the negative conditions of the minority Muslims and the efforts of Greece and Turkey, which were trying to establish a homogeneous national state, to solve this problem in their favor.
