Nikolay Vasilyevich Gogol (1809-1852): He was born in Ukraine, into a middle-class landowning family. The village life and Kazakh traditions that influenced his childhood were reflected in his works, and he wrote stories embroidered with elements of Ukrainian folk culture. He mercilessly mocked corrupt bureaucrats in his play The Inspector. With his novel Dead Souls, Gogol presented the criticism of the social order and individuals in 19th century Russia as a unique masterpiece.
