Omer Pasha
Ömer Pasha, a Christian from Lika who was trained in the Austrian army and later accepted Islam, became the sultan's leader with his knowledge, skill and merit. He had risen to the highest rank in his army.
He did not answer to the vizier, who was the civilian governor of Travnik, and did not ask anyone how long he would stay or where he would reside. He came to Sarajevo not to seize power and rule, but to fight and punish. And the people were terrified of this man.
In this novel by Nobel Prize-winning author Ivo Andriç, what happened in the city and in the serasker's mansion after the serasker Ömer Pasha came to Sarajevo is told with a fiction in which different characters take the stage in each chapter.
