Pragmatism and Sociology
Pragmatism, whose origins go back to Nietzsche, Romanticism, William James, John Dewey and Schiller, does not claim to deepen the immediate reality or replace it with a world made up of the creations of thought. What dominates pragmatism is a realistic and practical understanding.
The pragmatist person is a "person of action" and as a result, he attaches importance to things that happen. He does not carry out his action while dreaming; He never speaks with the voice of a preacher or an inspired person like Nietzsche; He knows neither fear nor anxiety. For him, reality is something to be "realized."
In Pragmatism and Sociology, which consists of the lecture notes given by Emile Durkheim at the Sorbonne in the 1913-1914 academic year, the deep relationship of Pragmatism with sociology is examined.
Durkheim says the following about these lectures: "What led me to choose the topic of this course? Why did I name the course Pragmatism and Sociology? First, because of the currency of Pragmatism (utilitarianism), which is almost the only theory on the theory of truth today; secondly, in Pragmatism, "Since, in common with sociology, there is a meaning of life and action, both movements are children of the same age."
