Chess is the story of a chess champion, ambitious players who seemingly cross paths on a ship, and a coin he secretly acquired during his imprisonment. Dr. is lost in his own mind with the games he learned from the chess manual. It looks like B's story. However, it is almost like a farewell letter from the author. Stefan Zweig wrote this story, which is a magnificent and suspenseful fiction, while he was in Brazil and completed it shortly before he committed suicide. The story sheds light on the extinction of European culture under the Nazi threat, and the spiritual tides and turmoil of societies subject to tyranny and oppression. Zweig presented the pressures and exile he secretly experienced in his own life to the reader by blending them with sometimes entertaining and sometimes deeply impressive scenes in the Chess story.
