reification
Among the various concepts that have been used to describe the destruction caused by capitalism in human relations, "reification", one of the most striking and easily understood, seems to be a unique tool in describing the concrete effects of capital on consciousness. However, it fell out of favor due to the influence of dualist, "secular" thought models that gained prominence in the 20th century. Bewes opposes this trend and argues that the concept of "reification", which he reformulated as a form of social/cultural concern, can still be very useful in the period of "late capitalism". Against the dualistic models mentioned, he creatively reconsiders the tripartite dialectic or 'religious' model in which each duality is mediated by a third order of existence that transcends and synthesizes the terms it contains: "Rather than discarding the concept of reification because of the implicit religiosity it contains... with secularism." "I tried to mediate the opposition between religions and in this way rehabilitate the concept of reification," he says.
We hope that this book, which offers a comprehensive and critical analysis of almost the entire 20th century thought from Adorno to Derrida, from Lukács to Negri, and frequently draws on the works of literary figures such as Proust and Flannery O'Connor, will be read with interest.
