Silahtar's Gardens
While writing Silahtarın Bahçeleri, Zabel Yesayan aimed not only to capture the many aspects of Istanbul in the early years of his life and the shocking sensory awareness of some special moments of his childhood experiences, but also to revive a world that was lost forever. None of his other writings are covered with that dim glow of such a poetic and melancholic longing. Therefore, as we read, we gradually begin to think of Üsküdar and its surroundings as a Heaven on Earth from which we were expelled, but which we regained thanks to the creativity of his imagination.
Zabel Yesayan is a female writer who is considered one of the most important writers of Armenian literature and sheds light on the intelligentsia and the process of nation-stateization (un)ification with her life and works.
Elif Safak
In his own words, Zabel Yesayan never fully abandoned his dream of being "a boy, an old man, a freedom fighter in the mountains..."
