Early 1950s California. Stuart Hadley has a seemingly ideal life. A beautiful wife, a nice house, a promising job with a promising future.
However, Stuart feels something is missing in his life, a dissatisfaction. Hadley is an angry young man, an artist, a dreamer, and a nutcase. To fill the void in his life he turns to alcohol, sex, and then fanatically to religion. He tries to be the perfect citizen, but everything he does leads him to plummet into a seemingly endless abyss.
One of the first stories by Philip K. Dick, Voices from the Street, was published posthumously in 2007. It incorporates many of the motifs and themes in this story, even his characters Jim Fergesson, Dr. He is a familiar character from Blood Money and he used it in his later works. Voices from the Street is one of the cornerstones of the PKD collection.
