The "Rethinking Social Sciences: Towards a New Understanding" symposium was held in February 1998. The two organizing journals, Society and Science and Defter journal, expressed their expectations from the symposium as follows: "To evaluate the establishment and development of social sciences in Turkey and relate them to their current situation; to create an environment that will enable social sciences to think about themselves; to promote cooperation between different branches of social sciences, if possible." to seek opportunities... and, from this point of view, to develop and discuss suggestions for the future in the fields of research, education and publishing..."
