Christianity and Islam in Anatolia during the Period of the Sultans
"My husband [Frederick W. Hasluck] spent most of his life between 1899 and 1916 in Greece and Turkey. In the spring of 1913 he visited the ancient city of Ikonium [Konya]. While there he studied the interaction between Christianity and Islam in the Turkish empire. It attracted his attention and from that moment on, this subject and its derivatives occupied most of his time. The result of his research is this book, which is the first comprehensive study on Turkish folklore and its relations with Christianity. But the differences in the work are so obvious. An explanation of the circumstances under which this book was written and published is essential.
After his visit to Konya, the author read and wrote regularly until the beginning of the war. His health made active military service impossible, and he continued his work amid ever-increasing difficulties until the summer of 1915. After this date, he joined the intelligence section of the British Embassy in Athens, where his extraordinary knowledge of the languages and general conditions of the Near East was utilized. On February 22, 1920, at the age of forty-second. He passed away a few days later.
It was then up to me to publish as much of his work as I could. He considered publishing two books on this current subject: One would be titled "Translations from Christianity to Islam and from Islam to Christianity" and the second would be titled "Studies on Popular Turkish History and Religion". But since their contents came from the same root and the "Studies" were left unfinished, my friends advised me to combine the two."
