The weakening and even loss of living languages due to their less and less use in the cultural and social sphere is not, and should not be, the problem of only the speakers of that language and those in that language world. The loss of a language is, in essence, the loss of a world. It is the loss of the narratives that have a history within that language world, the emotions, thoughts, understandings, intuitions, hopes carried within those narratives, in short, a reality developed within that language universe. The disappearance of languages, then, is the disappearance of an integral component of our field of social reality. When a language dies, when the last speaker of a language dies, an area of reality is closed, as if it had never existed.
