Basic Journalism
The first three editions of this work were prepared to enable both undergraduate students and those interested in journalism to become acquainted with this profession and to learn the concepts related to journalism terminology. In the fourth and fifth editions of the book, as in the first three editions, although the basic concepts of journalism were generally related to mass communication, the connection between journalism and the sociology of news was evaluated. In addition, the position of the monopolization phenomenon in world and Turkish journalism, the change in traditional journalism, the role and importance of the phenomenon of tabloidization, and the benefits and future benefits of internet journalism were examined.
In the sixth edition, monopolization, tabloidization, war journalism, citizen journalism and internet journalism, which have become increasingly decisive in world and Turkish journalism, were also included. In the seventh edition, peace journalism was added to the types of journalism mentioned in the sixth edition, while in the eighth edition, innovations deemed necessary were introduced over time. War and peace journalism, which was included in the seventh edition, was used verbatim in the eighth edition. On the other hand, human rights journalism, which has been discussed in recent years, is not included in the eighth edition of Basic Journalism, considering that this type of journalism can be evaluated together with war and peace journalism in the literature. Naturally, this approach, which is not used in the book, can be discussed.
In the eighth edition, some innovations deemed necessary in chapters 1, 3, and 4 had to be added. In the 8th chapter, new paragraphs titled globalization and counter-information flows and distribution, with an emphasis on news sociology, were placed and the current situation of information distribution in the world was evaluated. After the eleventh edition of the book, some innovations on new media were added to the twelfth edition.
Basic Journalism is the product of Oya Tokgöz's undergraduate and graduate courses given at Ankara University Faculty of Communication over a period of forty years and her scientific studies published in various academic publications.
