Philosophy of Social Ecology Book Description What is nature? What is humanity's place in nature? What is society's relationship to the natural world? In an age of ecological collapse, answering these questions is of great importance for our daily lives and for the future that we and other forms of life face. These are not abstract philosophical questions that need to be associated with a distant, imaginary world of metaphysical thought. Nor can we answer these questions casually, with poetic metaphors or thoughtless, banal reactions. The definitions and ethical standards we use to answer these questions may ultimately decide whether human society will creatively support natural evolution or render our planet uninhabitable for all complex life-forms, including ourselves. I called this book The Philosophy of Social Ecology because I believe that dialectical naturalism underpins the most fundamental message of social ecology. Indeed, "Thinking Ecologically" constitutes a direct transition from the philosophical and ethical to the social and visionary. Decades of thinking about ecological problems and ideas have taught me that philosophy, especially a dialectical naturalism, does not hinder our understanding of social theory and ecological problems. On the contrary, it provides us with rational tools to bring these problems together into a coherent whole and creates a framework for expanding this whole in more productive and innovative directions.
