The Other History of the Turks
The first people to use the concept of "Turk" in the sense of "tribe, tribe" were the Chinese, Iranians and Byzantines; The first people to use it as an "ethnic category" were Europeans. After all these years, discussions about what should be understood by the word "Turkish" and whether "Turks" are an ethnic group, a people, or a nation still continue.
In The Other History of the Turks, Ayse Hür examines the emergence and development of the concept of "Turk" in a process starting from the Yenisei Inscriptions and extending to the recent past, the formation of non-Turkish identity versus Turkish identity, and the interactions in this process. While the author deals with communities that have called themselves Turks throughout history or have been called "Turks" by others (the other), he also gives clues to trace concepts such as "Turks", "Turks", "Turkishness" throughout history.
