The 21st century was greeted with "Millennium" literature, ideological fireworks set off in honor of capitalism. The end of history was declared. It was loudly declared that socialism had collapsed and that the future contained no other option than capitalism. But in 2008, the convulsion in Wall Street, at the heart of the world financial markets, and the collapse of the investment bank Lehman Brothers, brought capitalism to the brink of the abyss. Our "only future" itself was about to disappear!

Establishment economists presented this event as a road accident, a "global financial crisis", a temporary "fix". Marxists, however, denied that this was an aberration that could be quickly overcome or a mere "financial crisis". They stated that we were facing a huge economic crisis from the very first day. Five years later, the fragile state of the world economy clearly reveals who was right.

In this book, Sungur Savran deals with the thesis that the crisis we are going through is a "Great Depression" (or "Depression") that has been experienced only twice before in the history of the capitalist mode of production. Like all great depressions, this Third Great Depression begins with the economy, but it does not end with the economy. According to Savran, a new era has opened in the development of capitalism. This period paves the way for major political, ideological and military upheavals around the world. It is a period in which class struggles and revolutionary attacks will rise on the one hand, and fascism and other types of reactionism will rise on the other. This dynamic lies in the background of the popular rebellion in Turkey, known as "Gezi Park", as in the great mass struggles and revolutions in Southern European countries and the Arab world.

Savran opposes such automatism as "it is capitalism, it will overcome its crisis". It reminds us that in the Great Depression of the 20th century, the way to overcome the crisis was Nazism and the Second World War. Today, either capitalism will collapse or humanity will once again face the danger of barbarism.
