The Long Twentieth Century examines the relationship between capital accumulation and state-building activities within the 700-year long period of capitalism. Giovanni Arrighi interprets the connections between institutions and structures that shape world history with the synthesis of social theory, comparative history and historical narrative that he has established with great mastery.

Following Braudel's approach, Arrighi states that the history of capitalism consists of successive "long centuries" in which a new hegemonic power, which reconstructed economic and political power networks, succeeded in gaining control of increasingly expanding economic areas on a world scale. In this work, the historical relations established between capital, state power and geopolitics by hegemonic classes and states, their gradual emergence and birth, their gaining historical importance on a world scale and their violent replacement by other types of relations are examined in detail. Within this framework, Arrighi explains the processes that the Florentine, Venetian, Genoese, Dutch, English and finally American styles of capitalism went through. The Long Twentieth Century ends with an examination of the state-capital relations that determined the emergence of American world power and are now forcing that power to give way to a new historical structure that is being established.
