Saintsburry and Andrew Lang say Palace of Subterranean Fire is Beckford's greatest achievement. I, on the other hand, claim that it is the first truly terrible hell of literary art and risk the following paradox: The most famous of literary hells, the kingdom of pain in the Divine Comedy, is not actually a terrible place, but just a place where terrible events occur. The distinction between the two is clear. There is an untranslatable word in Scottish dialect that describes supernatural horror: Uncanny. (...)
