Life Is Elsewhere
Milan Kundera, who made great contributions to the intellectual and political memory of 20th century Europe with his novels, wrote Life Elsewhere during the time when Czechoslovakia was occupied by Russia and published it in 1969. . Although wars, coups and political developments are always in the background of his novels, Kundera chose his characters mostly from the art circles, thus opening up the relations between current events and intellectuals for discussion. Life Elsewhere, which Kundera calls "for me the novel of the European revolution or something like that", is based on personal experiences and observations within intellectual circles: Jaromil, whose talent for painting and poetry was discovered when he was a child, has sexual identity confusion and hates his own body. He depicts his mother with "headless female bodies" and grows up in the tension of "life or writing".
Knowing that everyone was looking at him, he became brutally conscious of his face and felt, almost with horror, that what he was carrying on his face was his mother's smile. This gentle, bitter one. He definitely knew her smile, he felt it on his lips and he had no choice to get rid of it.
