When Summer Ends
18-year-old Charity lives in the house of lawyer Royall, who takes her under his protection. The young girl works in a small village, in the dusty and neglected library of the village, and lives a boring life, dreaming of big cities. Charity's ordinary days suddenly change when a young, cultured and handsome man comes to the village. While architect Lucius Harney wanders around this small village where he came to research about old, interesting buildings, Charity volunteers to guide him. Charity, who is fascinated by the young man, has no eyes for anyone else but him, and even engages in madness that surprises the whole village. As Lucius and Charity's relationship progresses and leaves the young girl faced with desperate problems, Mr. Royall offers a strange solution that Charity finds difficult to accept. This short novel by Edith Wharton, the author of The House of Pleasure, tells the story of a rebellious young girl living in a closed environment in the early 1900s, discovering sexuality, and skillfully expresses the common social pressures specific to that period within the framework of a naive love.
"For a moment, Charity looked at him with something akin to horror, as if the young man was a stranger with familiar qualities, then she shifted her gaze, there was an open suitcase half full of clothes on the floor. It was obvious that the young man was getting ready to leave, most likely he would leave without seeing her. Why In any case, he saw that this decision greatly disturbed Harney, and he at once perceived that his change of plan was the result of an underhanded intervention on the part of Mr. Royall.”
